How it works

BMI compares your weight to your height as a general screening number. It is the same formula worldwide; only the units differ.

BMI = weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ
  • Under 18.5 = underweight
  • 18.5โ€“24.9 = healthy
  • 25โ€“29.9 = overweight
  • 30+ = obese

Frequently asked questions

How is body fat percentage estimated here?

Using the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates it from height and tape measurements of the neck and waist (plus hips for women).

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

It varies by sex, age and goals. As a general guide, fitness ranges are roughly 14โ€“17% for men and about 21โ€“24% for women, with athletes lower. These are guides, not targets.

How accurate is the Navy method?

It is a reasonable no-equipment estimate but can differ by several percentage points from lab methods like DEXA or hydrostatic weighing.

Why use body fat instead of just weight?

Weight alone cannot tell muscle from fat. Body fat percentage describes composition, so it can reveal changes that the scale misses.

Does body fat percentage differ for men and women?

Yes. Women naturally carry more essential fat for normal physiological function, so healthy ranges are higher than for men.

Is this a medical assessment?

No. It is a general estimate for information only. For a clinical assessment, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Estimating body fat percentage

Body fat percentage is the share of your total weight that is fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, water and organs. It gives a more complete picture of body composition than weight alone, since two people of the same weight can have very different proportions of muscle and fat.

How this tool estimates it

It uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat from simple tape measurements โ€” height plus neck and waist (and hips for women). It is a practical, no-equipment estimate; clinical methods such as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing are more precise but require specialist equipment.

General reference ranges

Commonly cited ranges (American Council on Exercise) for men are roughly: essential fat 2โ€“5%, athletes 6โ€“13%, fitness 14โ€“17%, acceptable 18โ€“24%, and higher above that. Women carry more essential fat, so their ranges sit about 8โ€“10 points higher across the board. These are general guides, not strict targets.

Reading the result carefully

Circumference-based estimates can be off by several points compared with lab methods, and "healthy" body composition varies with age, sex, ethnicity and fitness goals. Use the figure as one general indicator alongside other measures, and consult a healthcare professional for any assessment tied to your health.
