Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. 18% of a $50 bill is 50 ร 0.18 = $9.
How much should I tip at a US restaurant?
Around 15โ20% for table service is customary, with 18โ20% common for good service.
What is a quick way to estimate 20%?
Take 10% by moving the decimal one place, then double it. 10% of $50 is $5, so 20% is $10.
How do I split a bill with tip?
Add the tip to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people sharing.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Some tip on the pre-tax subtotal; the difference on a typical bill is minor.
Do tipping customs vary by country?
Yes, widely. US norms are relatively high; some countries tip little or include service in the bill, so check local customs when travelling.
How to calculate a tip
A tip is a percentage of the bill: tip = bill ร (percentage รท 100), and the total is the bill plus the tip. This calculator works out the gratuity and the grand total, and can split it among several people.
Worked example
On a $50 bill at 18%, the tip is 50 ร 0.18 = $9, for a total of $59. A quick mental method: 10% of $50 is $5, half of that (5%) is $2.50, so 15% is $7.50 and 20% is $10.
US tipping norms
In US restaurants with table service, tips of around 15โ20% are customary, with 18โ20% common for good service. Tipping is more discretionary for counter service and varies by country, so customs differ widely when travelling.
To split a bill evenly, divide the total (including tip) by the number of people. Some prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount; either is acceptable, and the difference on a normal bill is small.
