Adding and subtracting
Put both fractions over a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± cb) / (bd). For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6.
Multiplying and dividing
To multiply, multiply across: (a/b) × (c/d) = ac/bd. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc. So 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = (2×5)/(3×4) = 10/12 = 5/6.
Simplifying
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. 8/12 simplifies to 2/3 because both divide by 4.
Mixed numbers
Convert a mixed number to an improper fraction first: 2¼ = (2×4 + 1)/4 = 9/4. Convert back by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
