Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 15% tip on a 60 bill is 60 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.

How much should I tip?

It depends on where you are. Around 15–20% is customary in the United States; in many other countries service is included and a smaller tip or rounding up is normal.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. This calculator shows each person’s share automatically.

Should I tip on the pre‑tax or post‑tax amount?

Customs vary; many people tip on the pre‑tax subtotal. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the calculator applies the percentage to it.

How the tip is calculated

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, and the total is the bill plus the tip. Dividing the total by the number of people gives each person’s share.

Tipping varies by country

Customs differ widely: tipping 15–20% is normal in the United States, while in many countries a service charge is already included and a small tip or rounding up is enough. Use the percentage that matches local custom.
