Brick Calculator CA

Estimate how many bricks you need for a wall from its size, the brick size and the mortar joint.

Bricks needed

How it works

Enter the wall length and height, the brick dimensions and mortar joint, and choose single or double skin. The calculator works out the wall area, bricks per square metre and the total number of bricks including a waste allowance.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks do I need?

Work out the wall area, then multiply by about 60 bricks per m² for a single-skin wall (or 120 for a double-skin wall), and add 5–10% for wastage.

How many bricks are there per square metre?

About 60 standard bricks per square metre for a single-skin wall, and roughly 120 per square metre for a thicker one-brick wall.

How much wastage should I allow for bricks?

Add around 5–10% to cover cuts, breakages and faulty bricks.

How many bricks for a double-skin wall?

Roughly double a single skin — about 120 bricks per square metre before wastage.

What is the standard brick size?

A common metric brick is 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm; with a 10 mm mortar joint its face works out to about 225 × 75 mm.

Do I need to include mortar?

Yes — mortar fills the joints between bricks. Allow for cement and sand in addition to the bricks themselves.

Brick Calculator

This calculator estimates how many bricks a wall needs: wall area ÷ area of one brick (including the mortar joint), plus a wastage allowance for cuts and breakages.

Bricks per square metre

A standard brick face with a 10 mm mortar joint is about 225 × 75 mm, so a single-skin (half-brick) wall needs roughly 60 bricks per square metre. A thicker one-brick (double-skin) wall needs about 120 per square metre.

Wall typeBricks per m²
Single skin (half-brick)~60
One-brick (double skin)~120

Worked example

A wall 5 m long and 2.4 m high is 12 m². As a single-skin wall that is 12 × 60 = 720 bricks; adding 10% for wastage gives about 792 bricks.

Add a wastage allowance

Order around 5–10% extra to cover cut bricks, breakages and the odd faulty unit, so you are not held up mid-build.

Don’t forget mortar

You will also need mortar for the joints; roughly one bag of cement-and-sand mix lays a few hundred bricks, but check your mix and joint size.
