SST Calculator MY

Add or remove consumption tax and see the net and gross amounts.

How it works

Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate and adds it on. Removing tax works backwards from a tax-inclusive price to find the original net amount.

Gross = Net ร— (1 + rate); Net = Gross รท (1 + rate)

Frequently asked questions

What is SST in Malaysia?

The Sales and Service Tax โ€” a single-stage tax made up of a sales tax on goods (5% or 10%) and a service tax on prescribed services (mostly 8%).

What is the service tax rate?

8% for most taxable services, with 6% retained for certain categories such as food and beverage and telecommunications, following changes from 2024.

What are the sales tax rates?

5% or 10% on taxable goods depending on the category, with some goods exempt.

How is SST different from VAT?

SST is charged once (single-stage) and is not reclaimable, whereas VAT is charged at each stage with businesses crediting the tax on their inputs.

How do I add 8% service tax to a price?

Multiply by 1.08. RM100 becomes RM108, of which RM8 is service tax.

Can businesses claim back SST?

Generally no. Unlike VAT, SST is single-stage with no input tax credit, so it is usually a direct cost where charged.

How SST works in Malaysia

Malaysia uses a Sales and Service Tax (SST) rather than a VAT. Unlike VAT, SST is a single-stage tax โ€” it is charged once, either at the manufacturing/import stage (sales tax) or when a taxable service is provided (service tax), and is not reclaimable along the supply chain.

Sales tax and service tax

Sales tax is levied on goods at 5% or 10% depending on the category (some goods are exempt). Service tax applies to prescribed services at 8% for most categories (with 6% kept for some, such as food and beverage and telecommunications) following the rate change and scope expansion from 2024.

Adding the tax

To add service tax at 8%, multiply the price by 1.08 โ€” RM100 becomes RM108. For 10% sales tax, multiply by 1.10. To remove a tax-inclusive amount, divide by the same factor: RM108 รท 1.08 = RM100 before tax.

SST is administered by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. Because it is single-stage, businesses do not claim input credits the way they would under a VAT, so the tax is generally a direct cost at the point it is charged.
