How it works

Compound interest earns returns on both your original money and the returns already added. Adding a regular monthly contribution accelerates growth further over time.

A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) + contributions compounded monthly
  • Longer time horizons benefit most from compounding
  • More frequent compounding gives slightly higher growth
  • The donut shows how much of your final balance is interest vs money you put in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and the weeks you work per year. ยฃ15/hour over a 37.5-hour week is ยฃ29,250.

How many hours are in a full-time year?

Commonly 1,950 (37.5 hours ร— 52) or 2,080 (40 hours ร— 52), depending on your contracted week.

How do I handle part-time hours?

Use your actual weekly hours multiplied by the number of weeks you work, instead of the full-time figure.

Does the result include overtime?

No. It converts base pay only; overtime, bonuses and shift premiums are extra.

Is the annual figure before or after tax?

Before tax. Income Tax and National Insurance are deducted, so take-home pay is lower.

How do I convert a salary back to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by your annual hours โ€” ยฃ29,250 รท 1,950 = ยฃ15 per hour.

Turning an hourly wage into an annual salary

To annualise an hourly wage, multiply it by the hours you work per week and the weeks you work per year. For full-time work of 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks that is 1,950 hours; a 40-hour week gives 2,080 hours โ€” use whichever matches your contract.

Worked example

At ยฃ15 an hour over a 37.5-hour week: 15 ร— 37.5 ร— 52 = ยฃ29,250 a year. At ยฃ12 an hour it is ยฃ23,400, and at ยฃ20 an hour ยฃ39,000. These are gross figures before tax and National Insurance.

Part-time and real hours

If you work other hours, use your actual weekly hours and the weeks you work. Paid holiday is usually included in the full-year basis, while unpaid leave reduces the total.

This converts base pay only. Overtime, bonuses and shift premiums add to real earnings, while Income Tax and National Insurance reduce take-home below the gross annual figure.
